On being a ‘fresher’

I am on the move yet again. For the third time in three years, I have packed up my life, put most of it into storage, rid myself of the dead box (that for another post), and whittled my life down to essentials. This time the move was larger, from Lowell, Massachusetts to Oxford, UK; the apartment search was excruciating and confusing but eventually successful.

I go to the student union at Oxford Brookes for freshers’ week and find myself marveling at how young everyone is. They know nothing and do not know they know nothing. I know too much and wish I didn’t. I smile fondly on them and they probably think I’m someone’s grandmother. Or a professor. or just some old lady with too much time on her hands.

I talk baseball with the guy at the gym, find out John Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox, also owns Liverpool FC, because one major league team wasn’t enough. Suddenly I don’t feel so out of place.
